Studied a few lions, wildebeests and some works of Frazetta before starting sketching. They wanted a classic heavy metal cover art aestetic so frazetta was (duh!?) a good base of inspiration. Put some time into the graphite sketch, scanned it and painted it in Photoshop cs2.
Thought alot about colour perspective and how the eye would read the picture effectively. Kept everything on seperate layers so I had full control. Used a simple round brush with pressure sensitivity on different opacities. 70-100% when blocking up forms and then smoothing things out with everything from 10-50%.
